Benoit Blanc Crashes a Party in the 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' Trailer

Rian Johnson’s new whodunnit is almost here.

Who invited this guy? In a new trailer for Rian Johnson’s upcoming whodunnit Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) finds himself in a new locale — a Grecian beach. It’s a far cry from the snowy mansion of the first film, but there’s one Knives Out constant: a murder has been committed, and there’s only one man who can put the pieces together and solve it. You can check out the brand new trailer below.

The trailer gives us a peek at the film’s star-studded cast, which includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista. The first Knives Out followed a squabbling family, but as in many other places, Glass Onion takes a different approach. Norton plays Miles Bron, a tech billionaire who invites his coterie of friends to a private island for a murder mystery party. The personalities are, shall we say, a little larger this time around.

“They’re all performing,” writer and director Johnson told Netflix. “They’re all operating in an elevated way. It’s not a family in the middle of New England working their stuff out. These are people who are all making their living, whether it’s as politicians or as rock star scientists, or as fashion magnates.”

In the middle of that privileged stew is dropped a person from a very different profession: Benoit Blanc himself, detective extraordinaire. Craig and his hilariously overblown accent return, and Johnson couldn’t be happier. “To have a continuing working relationship with one of the best actors on the planet who’s also a completely lovely guy... I’d be a fool to not jump at that opportunity.”

The feeling is mutual. “It was a no-brainer, really, just to come and work with Rian again,” Craig said. “We had such an amazing cast in the last one and I didn’t know how we were going to top that, but we’ve equaled it. The working experience, just to come on set and make these movies, is such fun.”

“Blanc has a more central role in this movie,” Johnson noted. “You definitely get to know him a little bit better. In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat.” This time around, we join the party from Blanc’s perspective — as seen in one memorable moment from the trailer, as the camera circles around Blanc, and the other guests come into view. “Blanc gets this random invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island,” Johnson said. “We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”

That perspective also gives us a window into the mystery-solving mind of Benoit Blanc. “One of Benoit’s things is that he appears to be bumbling and not really on it,” Craig said. “But he is, and that’s always fun to play around with.”

Which, of course, means that we also get to hear a few of his board game opinions — specifically about the Parker Brothers classic game Clue. And they’re not what you might expect. “Ticking boxes, running around, searching all the rooms,” Benoit rants at the end of the trailer. “It’s just a terrible, terrible game.”

We can’t confirm that Johnson shares his protagonist’s disdain for Clue, but he certainly has a similar outlook on the challenge of writing a good mystery. “The mystery is not going to be what keeps the audience in their seats. Remember first and foremost that you’re making a movie and that it has to dramatically work before it intellectually works as a puzzle,” Johnson said. “That’s actually still the hard part –– creating a good story that feels unique and exciting, and emotionally feels satisfying at the end.”

If Johnson has his way, he’ll be creating those stories for many years to come. “It’s another case in Benoit Blanc’s hopefully long list of cases,” he said. The game is well and truly afoot.
