Atos develops digital solution to calculate product carbon footprints within the chemical industry in partnership with BASF

Munich, 19. August 2021 – Atos and BASF will launch a digital solution for companies in the chemical and process industries to identify, monitor, and eventually reduce the carbon footprint of chemical products. For this purpose, BASF provides its digital solution and methodology for calculating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of chemical products and selected Atos as a partner for the development of a software platform based on this methodology to make the PCF calculation approach available to the industry.

The offering is currently groundbreaking and an important step for the industry to drive the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions towards net zero. Following the goal of establishing an industry standard for PCF calculation processes in the chemical as well as the process industry, Atos will launch a software leveraging BASF’s methodology and know-how from their in-house solution. Atos will distribute and implement the solution as one of the leading IT service providers with a strong focus on decarbonization and the chemical industry sector. The partnership is one of a number of initiatives by Atos to enable and accelerate its customers’ journey towards “Net Zero“.

Alessandro Pistillo, Director Digital Strategic Projects at BASF, says: “Carbon transparency is a backbone for steering towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Our recently launched ecosystem of partnerships will accelerate the calculation, reporting and exchange of PCF data among actors along value chains. Atos is the first partner we are working with to make our digital solution and methodology available to other industry players including our suppliers and customers.”

The solution provides customers from the chemical industry with the opportunity to use an already tested and certified solution that efficiently calculates the carbon footprint of a chemical product based on primary and high-quality secondary data. The methodology from BASF is certified by TÜV Rheinland and complies with ISO requirements and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Standard as well. Through it, companies can assess their portfolio and production network in terms of CO2 emissions and take action to reduce their PCF. In addition, the approach can support companies to adjust to future climate legislation.

Stephan Grötzner, Global Head of Chemicals & Process Industries at Atos, says: “The chemical and process industry makes an important contribution in the fight against climate change. At the same time, the industry is confronted with various regulations. Together with our partner BASF, we want to help our customers better record and assess their product carbon footprints through uniform standard approaches and innovative technologies. We are proud to contribute our expertise in digital solutions for decarbonization to this target.”
